The Dead Man's Party quest in The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone offers one of the most memorable narrative deviations in the entire game. Tasked by Olgierd von Everec to give his deceased brother Vlodimir the night of his life, Geralt must navigate a unique blend of supernatural possession and festive wedding activities. Understanding the core mechanics and objectives of this mission helps players experience every piece of unique dialogue and reward available.
Summoning Vlodimir von Everec
To begin the quest, Geralt must meet with Shani in Oxenfurt to gather details regarding the von Everec family crypt. After venturing into the crypt and defeating the hostile wraiths inside, Geralt uses a censer to spread incense and light the central votive. This ritual successfully summons the ghost of Vlodimir, who quickly possesses Geralt's body to attend an upcoming wedding celebration.
Exploring the crypt further reveals optional loot, including a key found on a graverobber's corpse that unlocks nearby treasure rooms. However, players should prepare for a minor ambush by arachnomorphs while navigating these dark side passages. Once outside the crypt, fast travel becomes temporarily unavailable as you make your way toward the wedding venue alongside Shani.
Participating in the Wedding Activities
Upon arriving at the farm in Brunwich, Geralt and Vlodimir must interact with the newlyweds before partaking in several festive mini-games. These activities include driving stubborn pigs into a pen, fishing Shani's shoe out of the lake, playing Gwent with halflings, and tracking down a missing fire swallower in the woods. Completing these events grants substantial experience points and unlocks unique vanity items like the King of Swineherd's crown.
Tracking down the fire swallower requires using Witcher Senses to follow tracks away from the main farm grounds. Players can choose to calm the tree-bound performer using the Axii sign or pay him extra crowns to ensure he returns to perform for the guests. Alternatively, if the fire swallower leaves, Geralt can step in and juggle to entertain the crowd instead.
Confronting Gaunter O'Dimm and Ending the Night
As midnight approaches, Gaunter O'Dimm appears at the wedding and interrupts the festivities with a chilling interaction directed at Vlodimir. Speaking with Master Mirror provides subtle foreshadowing regarding the overarching plot of the expansion. Following the conversation, players head to the barn to witness the traditional capping ceremony as the party concludes.
After Vlodimir is forcefully banished back to his grave by Gaunter O'Dimm, Geralt is left to conclude his time with Shani. This transitions into the secondary quest A Midnight Clear, where Geralt can offer rowan berries to cheer her up before returning to Oxenfurt. Informing Olgierd that his request has been satisfied officially completes the quest and moves the expansion's main story forward.
